Easy Summer to Fall Fashion Transition Pieces

In the world of social media, fall is now in full swing even if it is still technically summer for a few more weeks. September is a weird month in most places – still blistering hot yet subtle signs of fall popping up. In Southern California it is summer all through October most years, making us long for a real fall with changing leaves and chilly temperatures. Being in a warmer climate, it is important for me to have transition fashion. These items must be cool enough to wear in hotter than normal temperatures yet still give off fall vibes. If you haven’t already, I highly recommend reading my Fat Girl’s Guide to Fall Fashion 2020 before going forward! I’ve learned over the years to break traditional rules of fashion, and that you can make any piece work for any season. It is all about accessorizing in a way that reflects the current season’s trends and colors.

Denim Jackets

My all-time favorite fashion piece – the denim jacket – is a crucial part of my spring, summer, AND fall wardrobe. A denim jacket is such a versatile piece that can be worn in any season and most weather. But be aware, not all denim jackets are created equal. Some denim jackets are lighter with more ‘jegging’ like material, these are great for summer when it can be very hot. My favorite denim jackets are from ELOQUII, Lane Bryant, and Torrid. I prefer the heavier, thicker denim for spring and fall climates. I also think a more structured denim jacket can really pull a look together! Another aspect to be mindful of is the length. I have a short torso so I prefer cropped and shorter length denim jackets. The length of the jacket also can dress up or down a look. A cropped denim jacket and dress is perfect for a date night, a long denim jacket and shirt dress is great for a casual day running errands.

Embroidered Dresses

You may think am embroidered dress is more of a summer style, but I beg to differ. An embroidered dress is a pinnacle of summer to fall transition fashion. Depending on the colors and patterns, an embroidered dress is perfect for hotter climates while still feeling in the fall mood. They are very easy to accessorize – add some booties, a jean jacket, and you’re ready for fall!

Shirt Dresses

The shirt dress has become a fashion staple for many, as brands continue to make them year after year. I’ve learned that a shirt dress is another extremely versatile piece you can wear across seasons and dress up or down. A white or black shirt dress can be worn essentially anywhere. Throw it on to go to the grocery store – or add a belt, heels, jewelry, and a handbag for a date night. I will not be underestimating the power of a shirt dress again!

Pleated or Plaid Skirts

I’m a sucker for a cute mini skirt with leggings in the fall and winter. I love having separates so I can mix and match new outfits without having to buy new pieces. I am always on the lookout for cute pleated and plaid skirts I can pair with t-shirts and sweaters I already have on hand. A black pleated skirt can go with literally any sweater or shirt. Plaid will always be in for Fall, it is a timeless print that has its footprint in the season. This year I am on the lookout for both pleated midi and mini skirts, that way I can further mix and match my outfits and create different silhouettes.

Cardigans

I have Taylor Swift’s ‘Cardigan’ on repeat in my head, anyone else obsessed with her new album?! Cardigans are a workhorse in your closet – they work for just about any season. Cardigans are extremely versatile and can be dressed up or down, worn in all four seasons, and never go out of style. There are also a ton of different cardigan styles – the fitted cropped cardigan, the oversize cardigan, the fuzzy cardigan, and lots more! I am one of those girls who always have a jacket or cardigan on hand for chilly nights or the unpredictable days. Cardigans are extremely practical, and a budget-friendly option for your closet as you can wear them year-round!

Closed Toed Shoes

Closed-toed shoes are a must in cooler temperatures, and a sure sign that summer is over. There are so many closed-toed shoe options to choose from, and all give a more cozy vibe. I am loving the loafer trend that is going on right now! Other options include sneakers, heels, ankle boots, mules, and pointed or square toe flats. Booties are a big fall staple in most women’s wardrobe. They can be flat or with a chunky heel, leather or suede, there are so many fall shoe options that can transform any outfit!

Your Favorite Basics in Fall Colors

One of my biggest style tips is to look for your favorite basics in fall colors. Often times, companies will release their basic clothing pieces in seasonal colors. I feel no shame in having multiple of the same item, especially if its a transitional or basic piece I can wear for years. Picking up your favorite soft t-shirt in a mustard or burgundy color can completely change your fall wardrobe. This is a great way to upgrade your closet without breaking the bank. Buying things you already love and wear often in different colors ensures you’re getting the most bang for your buck!

I am more than ready for fall and the holiday season after the year we’ve all had. While I usually go all out each season, I have decided to invest more in transition pieces that will work in multiple seasons and last me years. I am slowly moving further and further away from fast fashion and really investing in small businesses with high-quality pieces. No matter your budget – whether you’re shopping at the thrift store or Nordstrom – you can find amazing pieces at amazing prices that will elevate your wardrobe. There are always amazing sales going on, remember to never pay full price for any fashion!
