A Fat Girl’s Guide to Fall Fashion 2020

The season of pumpkin spice lattes is fast approaching, and we all know what that means. Come September 8th our social media feeds will be filled with orange, yellow, and burgundy hues. Our skinny legend counterparts will be posing in perfectly fallen leaves and DIYing fall decor. Be ready for a resurgence of Starbucks cups, booties, and pumpkin patches. Fall is the start of the holiday season – a happy time of cooler weather, family dinners, and unbeatable sales. There are already some unbeatable sales going on with new Fall fashion from some of my favorite stores!

Dressing for Fall

Being a plus size girl we inherently have a lack of options when it comes to fashion. We all know how difficult it can be finding the perfect pair of wide width boots, or hunting down a mustard dress that is actually made for our bodies. After years of searching on my own, I have created an ever-changing list of my favorite online stores that are ahead of the game when it comes to fat girl fashion.

First, a list of Fall fashion staples:

  • A good pair of booties or ankle boots
  • A fabulous pair of knee or thigh-high boots
  • A neutral coat (black, grey, beige, tan, camel, etc)
  • A couple knit sweaters
  • A few scarfs to add texture and color (prints, burgundy, mustard, etc)
  • A pair of solid black tights or leggings
  • A great pair of skinny jeans
  • A couple dresses or skirts to pair with your sweaters

Of course, these items are just a starting point, and you’ll want to customize to your personal style and aesthetic. These are great staples to get started with curating the perfect fall wardrobe for your budget and style. I am always changing my style season to season – it is ok to switch it up! Figuring out your own personal style is always the hardest part. If you are on a tight budget it is more economical to pick one and stick to it for each season!

Fat Fall Styles

There are endless fall styles to choose from, ranging from classic to trendy to avant-garde!

There are too many different styles to add here, it is all about knowing your own personal style and picking items that fit that.

Don’t Shy Away from Trends

The worst thing you can do is shy away from the season’s trends because of the number on the scale. There are a few up and coming brands making waves in the plus size fashion industry making trendy clothes for us.

According to Marie Claire, Pop Sugar, and Vogue, these are the Fall 2020 Fashion Trends: Faux Fur, Fringe, Faux Leather, Jewel Tones, Preppy & Punk Style, All Neutrals, and Sequins Galore!

Shop Till You Drop!

If you have the funds, the remainder of the year is going to be a great time to shop. Due to COVID, many brands are seeing lackluster sales – resulting in higher than normal discounts and extra stock. Even with many of us staying at home more, it may be a good year to update your wardrobe with new staple pieces or try something trendy and out of the box. I will be continuing to post about the best sales throughout the holiday season, so stay tuned for that!

Live Your Best Life

My best tip for all my fellow plus size ladies out there – never let the number on the scale or tag hold you back from expressing yourself through fashion. Fashion is universal – no matter what gender, age, ethnicity, or weight. We should all be able and comfortable wearing what we love, not what society tells us to wear. Obviously, the fashion industry has a long way to go with equality and the body positivity movement. Even so, there are so many up and coming brands popping up giving us more and more options. Don’t be afraid to break boundaries in fashion! Wear the floor-length faux fur coat, the skin-tight leather skirt, full sequin jumpsuit, or bold pant suit.
