Now that it’s mid-winter, the weather is the harshest it will be all year for my sensitive skin. I struggle every year trying to keep my skin moisturized and balanced. This year I’ve finally discovered the best way to take care of my skin in cold dry weather! I’ve discovered a less-is-more approach is key to protecting our skin from harsh weather. Now is not the time to try out a new harsh acid serum or rough mechanical exfoliant. It’s time to paper and protect instead. If your skin is already dangerously dry, it’s not too late to fix it! My winter skincare tips will save dry skin and prevent new dryness.
1. A Gentle Cleanser
Using a gentle non-stripping cleanser is especially important during the winter. If you have dry-type skin like me, you don’t want to pull all of the natural oils out of your skin. One of my favorite cleanser brands is CeraVe. It has hyaluronic acid and ceramides, which hydrate and restore the skin barrier. Look for cleansers with those ingredients, as well as the non-comedogenic marker so they won’t leave behind pore-clogging residue.
2. A Heavier Moisturizer
This winter, I’ve been experimenting with using the same moisturizer both in the morning and at night. I love the results! Usually this time of year, my skin is too dry during the day and my night moisturizer never absorbs well. Now with a heavier mosturizer used twice per day, my moisture level stays balanced day and night.
3. Increase Humidity
A humidifier has been the best boost to my skin’s moisture and I wish I tried it sooner! It increases the moisture content of the air, which has improved the quality of my skin on both my face and body. I’ve gone through a lot less lotion this season, which I think is all thanks to the humidifier. I have a small humidifier so I can easily move it around the house with me throughout the day. It never leaves my side!
4. Lip Protectors
Keeping lips moisturized and healthy during the winter is a major challenge. At this point in my life, I feel like I’ve tried every product out there to keep my lips healthy. These lip balms keep my lips well protected and improve the quality of my lips.
5. SPF Every Season
I usually stop using sunscreen during the winter, but I’ve realized it’s essential skin care all year round. In order to remember to apply sunscreen daily, I use products that combine SPF with skincare. I love the ease of combination serum-sunscreens and tinted sunscreens. These are great options to add to your morning routine.
6. Stay Hydrated
It’s so easy to forget to drink enough water when the temperature dips. Staying hydrated is important to overall health, but can really make a difference for our skin. There is no lip product that can save your chapped lips if you aren’t drinking enough water. The best way I stay hydrated is by keeping a water bottle with me all day. If I don’t see my water bottle, I’ll forget to drink water! Find a method that works for you to get in your 8 glasses per day.
